Wood’s Lamp

The beauty industry has witnessed a surge in technological advancement. In fact, the beauty business has experienced significant growth in recent times. There are lots of equipment used in the beauty industry to help clients maintain their good look. One such equipment is wood’s lamp. The woods lamp is an apparatus used in diagnosing skin disorders.

What is a Wood’s Lamp Examination?

A wood’s lamp examination is a procedure that uses light to detect several skin conditions. It can also be used to diagnose skin pigment disorders such as vitiligo and other skin irregularities. This procedure can also be used to know whether you have a scratch on the surface of your eye.

How does the Process work?

A wood’s lamp is a small handheld device that uses light to detect specific skin conditions. Keep in mind that the process has to take place in a darkened room. As the light hovers around the skin, the light changes as it detects infections, bacteria or viruses. At this point, you know the right spot that needs to be given proper care and attention. Some of the conditions that a wood’s lamp examination can help diagnose include vitiligo, melasma, tinea capitis, pityriasis versicolor and much more.

If you have scratches on the surface of the eye, your doctor will apply a fluorescein solution in the affected area and then use the device over it. Scratches or any other condition will become visible as the light from the devices shines on it. The best part is that the procedure is safe and free of side effects.

When performing this test, there are a few things you need to know. You are advised not to wash the affected area before the procedure. Doing otherwise may lead to a false result. Also, do not apply makeup, perfume, and deodorant on the affected area before the procedure. This is because some of these cosmetic products come with ingredients that will cause your skin color to change while under the woods lamp.

Usually, the procedure is usually done by a professional doctor or a dermatologist. More so, the procedure is simple and does not take a long time. Once it’s time to begin the process, you will be asked to take off clothing that covers the area that needs to be examined. After that, the room will be darkened in order to get an accurate result and then the doctor will hold the wood’s lamp a few inches away from your skin to examine it under the light.

What Do The Results Stand For?

If your skin has no infection or virus, the light will turn purple or violet and your skin will not glow while this procedure is ongoing. However, if the reverse is the case, then your skin will change color. This usually happens when the woods lamp detects fungal or bacteria on your skin.

A room that is not well darkened and applying other cosmetic products such as perfumes, makeup and more can result in a false positive or false negative result.
